Playboy Protest, 1982

Playboy Party

Though Brandeis used to hold an annual “Playboy Weekend,” pornographic magazines – Playboy, Playgirl, and Penthouse – for sale at the campus bookstore, generated considerable campus debate in 1982 and 1983. Groups took all sides with the Women’s Coalition opposing their sale, Justice editors supporting sale in the interests of free speech, and campus Democrats voting for them to remain on the shelves. Joe Rushworth, the bookstore manager, moved the magazines behind the counter and then removed them stimulating continued campus debate.
